- Download and review the reading questions for "The Luck of Roaring Camp," You do not need to respond to these, but should mark moments in the story which seem to provide an answer to these questions.
- Download the "WA2 Short Story Paragraphs" document. Using your notes, select a topic and begin writing topic sentences.

- In a Google Docs document on your iPad, respond to the questions using complete sentences.
- Format your document with an MLA header and in Times New Roman, size 12 font.
- Title your document "Soldier's Home Questions."
- Upload to the Turnitin.com folder "Short Story Discussion Question Responses" on Turnitin.com by midnight. If Turnitin.com is not working, immediately email your responses to Ms. Herrick.

- In your Literature to Go, review pages 13 and 14 of "The Story of an Hour" with a pencil and/or highlighter in hand. Mark passages that describe Mrs. Mallard's physical response to her newfound "freedom." You should underline or [bracket] full sentences or phrases that show this reaction, and circle specific words that seem important within those sentences.
- Bring your grammar book! (A picture is posted in the left-hand column, under the picture of Literature to Go, if you don't know what it looks like. The ISBN number is in your syllabus.)
In class on Monday, September 12th
- In your Literature to Go, read "Reading Fiction Responsively" on pages 11-12 and Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour" on pages 13-15.
- As you read "The Story of an Hour," underline and/or bracket moments where you see Chopin has used direct and/or indirect characterization. Label your markings with "DC" or "IC." If you do not wish to write in your book, you may take photos of the story on your iPad and mark on the photos in a note-taking app.
- Download "'The Story of an Hour' Questions" from the Course Documents column to Google Docs. Read the instructions carefully and answer the questions using complete sentences. It is best to complete your responses in Google Docs.
- Upload your responses to Turnitin.com by the end of class, or 4:00 PM. You must submit them whether or not they will be late.

- Find three moments in the book where Knowles makes deliberate, explicit reference to the lighting (a sunset, for example) or to an individual light (such as the light over the poker table in Leper's room).
- Write down the page number of this moment, along with a sentence describing the scene and the type of light.
